Many-core Dataflow System Software

ETI’s FIRST microOS system software solution for many-core computing

Traditional operating systems (OS) are based on the sequential execution model developed in the 1960s and are unable to address the challenges posed by new many-core parallel architectures. ETI’s patented FIRST microOS addresses the needs of advanced multi-core technology by exploiting a decentralized software model to manage and unleash the power of many-cores working in parallel. FIRST is currently deployed on a 10,000+ core system, one of the world’s fastest and most power-efficient computers used by the US government.

Our system software provides a solution for peta-scale systems rooted in deep dataflow technology:

* Multi-chip, multi-core, shared-memory multiprocessing eliminates OS message-passing penalties and hardware-coherent caching dependencies.
* Lightweight, thread-virtual machine technology is rooted in dataflow and asynchronous, fine-grain multithreading and synchronization.
* Dynamic workload/locality optimizations combine user input, static analysis, and runtime percolation for effective memory hierarchy mapping.

Why Use ETI’s System Software?

Traditional operating systems are intended for single-core processors. Direct porting of existing single or dualcore based systems and application software solutions onto a many-core system leads to poor performance that deteriorates further as the number of cores increases. Without major software adaptation, traditional operating systems cannot execute runtime processes efficiently beyond several cores.
